Rock Shooter (TV)
Canon Information: Strength is the
Other Self of a girl named Yuu Koutari. Other Selves are beings that exist in an otherworldly shared psychic space and exist to help bear the pain and grief of their real world counterparts. When the real person is experiencing emotional trauma, the Other Self takes the pain from their heart so they don't have to suffer physical pain as well. This takes the form of the Other Selves of the people who are causing the emotional pain waging savage battles against each other - in the real world, the struggles are all social in nature; but in the other world, it's nothing but brutal combat.
That's the most important
concept to understand about the character to put the rest of this in context. The most important actual
event to understand is that Strength and Yuu swapped places at a certain point in their history, after Yuu decided that the emotional trauma of the real world was too much to handle and she'd much rather deal with the straightforward battles of Strength's world. Strength, likewise, became afraid of dying after she saw Black Rock Shooter dispassionately killing a different Other Self. So the two decided to trade places, with Strength taking on Yuu's role in the real world. Only people with Other Self counterparts could see or interact with her, though.
The rest of the history is explained on their respective character pages
here and
here. Strength is being pulled from the point in the story where she and Yuu have merged into one body in the other world to try to fight against Black Rock Shooter, who has rampaged out of control after gaining emotions. Most of the relevant story detail is actually on the page about Yuu, since most of what you see of Strength is while she's pretending to be her.
Canon Point: Near the beginning of episode 7 during the fight with Black Rock Shooter
Age: Assuming she's been around as long as Yuu, probably about 13
God Houses:
Heimdall would make the most sense for Strength, considering she's a being created for the express purpose of defending a single person against trauma. Even though she runs from the physical pain of her duty, she still ends up bearing the emotional pain after the two trade places.
Frigg is a solid second place, as the Other Selves' natural state is to be devoid of all emotional impulses
except wanting to love and protect their counterparts in the real world. While it's not exactly motherly love, it's a very deeply ingrained protective instinct that would fit well here.
And coming from the other angle, Tyr wouldn't be bad, to help her develop her courage and get back into the habit of fighting knock-down drag-out battles without succumbing to her fear of death. Ride for ruin and the red dawn, etc.
Personality:
Other Selves don't have much of a personality to speak of when they first come into existence. Their entire being is dedicated to protecting the feelings of their counterparts in the real world, and their own world is composed of nothing but bleak landscapes and harsh battles. It's not a place that really needs or values emotion. All that changed when she saw Black Rock Shooter savagely fighting and killing in the Otherworld, though - and the first emotion she felt was that of fear. Fear of death, of nonexistence, and of the immense pain involved in continuing her endless fight.
This fear, combined with her natural impulse to love and protect her counterpart Yuu, colored the rest of Strength's existence afterward. She's a bit of a study in opposites in regard to this particular topic, both running away from her assigned role but taking on a different burden instead when she traded places with Yuu to handle her emotional burdens. Strength can't bear the thought of slipping into nonexistence, but even this fear, primal though it is, isn't enough to override the emotions that gave rise to her in the first place. She exists to love and protect Yuu, and those will always remain at the core of her being.
In the course of living in the real world, Strength became very close to Mato, learning about what it's like to be human and have emotions through her new friend. Because of her true nature, she can only be seen by other girls that possess Other Selves, so Mato quickly became her best friend as she was the only person like this she knew for years. Mato describes her as "hyper" and having always done "weird things" in kindergarten, such as randomly making a break into the hallway in the middle of class, that can likely be attributed to Strength getting used to how the real world operates.
Eventually, she settled into a generally friendly and good-natured personality over the years. Yuu was content fighting in the other world, and Strength seemed to genuinely enjoy actual human connection. She is excitable and friendly, and wears her heart on her sleeve, even to the point of crying out loud in the schoolyard after witnessing a friend of hers get teased over a love letter in front of the rest of the class. She supports her friends just as strongly as she supports Yuu, cheering them on in their personal efforts and doing her best to cheer them up when they're down. This is mostly seen with Mato as she supports her on the basketball team, but also when Mato befriends Yomi. Strength enthusiastically pushes Mato to talk to Yomi when she's worrying about how to approach her for the first time, and does her best to befriend her as well. When the two start having disagreements and strife in their friendship, Strength steps in and tries to help the two come to an agreement.
Despite her general distaste for fighting, Strength does know how to summon up her courage when the situation calls for it. She helps Mato enter the other world to deal with Black Rock Shooter and the problems she's causing with her friendships, even going so far as to merge her own consciousness with that of Yuu when the two are fighting. For all the fear and worry that led her to trading places with Yuu in the first place, she jumps right into the fray when it comes to protecting those she cares about - in this case, both her other self in Yuu
and her best friend in Mato. And while she's being brought in from the middle of this conflict and hasn't experienced its aftermath yet, this does result in her sacrificing herself to save them both, showing that she's willing to go that far for the people she loves.
